With grant funding from Proposition 56, Mendocino County is developing a local oral health community improvement plan, which involves a comprehensive oral health needs assessment including the identification of needs and assets in the community. Asset mapping can often be a resource intensive process, and sometimes requires costly software that may not be feasible to acquire.

However, using locations of identified assets in the community, VIVA developed an interactive and easy-to-use map through Google Maps that was both cost effective and dynamic. The map allows stakeholders to see the distribution of oral health facilities across the county at a glance.

With the tool in place, VIVA worked with Mendocino County’s Advisory Committee to build their capacity to use the online tool. Now, asset mapping is ongoing and community-owned process that allows new assets to be added to the map as new partnerships are formed.
